The speaker: Tal Heppenstall
To improve health outcomes, reduce costs and create a better experience for our patients, health systems need to make better use of their data — and that’s one of the big areas where healthcare intersects with technology. At UPMC Enterprises, we are building innovative technology solutions to improve data access, data sharing, and the use of advanced analytics for healthcare. Our goal is to create tools that can overcome healthcare’s interoperability challenges to securely surface the right data at the right time. This a strategic priority for UPMC.
In Trends for Scaling Healthcare Innovation (session #339), Aimee Quirk, CEO, innovation Ochsner, and I will discuss innovation research findings and our experiences scaling innovation at our organizations. One of the case studies I'll share is how UPMC — a $22 billion integrated provider/payor system — scaled a centralized digital health platform to the enterprise-level. Our strategic imperative was to stand up a technology framework that would enable the integration of other solutions and applications, and offer “round-trip” information for clinicians through integration with the EMR. But standing up the technology is the easy part. In the case of UPMC’s centralized digital health platform, we were able to leverage an existing system-wide infrastructure to support scaling. My aim is that sharing our experience will provide listeners with ideas that can catalyze innovation efforts at their health systems.
