The HIMSS Interoperability Showcase™ is a powerful place for thought leaders and people with questions to connect during the HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition. Although it’s not just the connections made during the week that are important. The showcase brings standards-based interoperability to life by demonstrating systems exchanging and using data in real time to improve care, outcomes and experience.

How It Works

Topic Suggestion Process
The planning process begins in April with the topic suggestion process, when we open our call for demonstration topic suggestions. This is an opportunity for the industry to let us know what they are working on and what challenges they are facing. From this list of suggestions, we review and select a variety of demonstration topics that we anticipate will have a major impact on the healthcare ecosystem in the coming year.

This provides our participants a high-level blueprint of the topics we’ll be covering at the showcase and enables them to sign up and address these topics together. The list of topics contains everything from cancer research to infectious outbreaks—pretty much anywhere interoperable health information exchange is necessary to make a significant difference in how healthcare is delivered or received.

Teams Work Toward Interoperability
Our participating organizations work together to represent a topic by meeting weekly to discuss their technology capabilities, what they are working on and how they would like to demonstrate and share their exchange with our attendees. Participants use standards such as HL7 FHIR® and IHE Profiles to ensure seamless health information exchange, resulting in live demonstrations. All exchanges happen in real time between participants and nothing is prerecorded.

Participants represent an ecosystem of individuals that are tackling similar issues around a specific topic—but everyone meets together as peers and not as competitors. Large organizations collaborate with small startups to learn from each other how they can facilitate interoperability to improve health outcomes. Discussions span from what technically needs to be done to successfully connect, what standards they support and how to tell their stories in the most meaningful way.

Hear from HIMSS Interoperability Showcase participants about how the connections made during the showcase are helping to solve real-world challenges.

Showcase Planning
Hundreds of hours and a whirlwind of activity later, HIMSS and the participants determine the final educational sessions and topic descriptions for the connected demonstrations. The excitement and momentum grows as the showcase comes into sharper focus and is primed for the thousands of attendees on the exhibition floor.

What to Expect

The showcase is one of the most trafficked areas of the HIMSS Global Health Conference, with one in four attendees visiting. Within the showcase, demonstration tours run every hour. After each tour, you are invited to connect with our showcase participants and learn about their interoperability capabilities.

You can join one our education sessions that start 30 minutes past the hour, to gain insights and learn from your colleagues around the world about how they’re tackling challenges—a unique opportunity to network and ask questions.

If you are interested in a particular organization or entity, you can engage in one-on-one conversations within our Marketplace. Get all of your market research questions answered in one day and learn directly from industry experts.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Showcase@himss.org.
