Career Development Opportunities at HIMSS19

By Stefan Werdegar, manager, Professional Development, HIMSS North America

Network or don’t work!

One of my favorite quotes from my career so far and so relevant in today’s job market. Health IT professionals often are too busy (or don’t have access) to connect, learn, develop and share career development ideas with peers. When the time comes to make a professional change they are at a disadvantage with their preparation and network.

As we all know, success in finding your next position in the industry is largely through network relationships and proper planning. Luckily, the HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition has some great opportunities for professionals to help you in these areas in a fun and energizing environment.

Listed below are some of the career development opportunities available at HIMSS19 in Orlando. I encourage you to take ownership of your own development, because ultimately you are the key to your success. Step outside your comfort zone, meet others and stand out above the crowd!

Career Development Seminar – Monday, February 11

New this year is our Career Development Seminar. This innovative program is focused on the mid-careerist who wants an added edge and wants to hone their career and personal branding skills in the market. Multiple speakers will discuss relevant topics such as “soft skills,” where an industry chief information officer will talk about ways to enhance your leadership skills. At the end of the day a special networking event is offered where industry leaders will moderate discussions at several tables with topics such as negotiation skills and finding your fit in the industry. A great way to meet colleagues and share ideas in a fun environment. Advance registration required. Learn more

Career Fair – Wednesday, February 13

Back by popular demand, HIMSS is holding its annual fair where employers, consultants, job seekers and others gather in one place. Several leading companies and academic organizations in the health IT market will be available to meet you, review your resume and discuss open opportunities.

The event starts off with a networking breakfast where you can meet colleagues and key influencers in the health IT industry. We will have a portrait studio so you can have a professional headshot taken which is great for your social media profile. There will be six education sessions with informative speakers on career topics such as expectations and strategies for the job search. Also returning in 2019 is our popular resume review, where participants from all levels in the industry can have their resume critiqued by an industry expert. And, don’t forget to stop by and view our students and early careerists posters. This event is free, but registration is required. Learn more

Student Institute – Friday, February 15

HIMSS has also created a new event geared toward students and early careerists called the Student Institute. This interactive event will feature industry expert Bonnie Siegel, who will share helpful tips in areas such as networking through social media, market trends, resume writing and interview skills. The day will be capped off with a panel of academic and industry experts and a student/early careerist who will answer audience questions about career development. Advance registration required.
