Dr. Sean Spina is a Clinical Pharmacotherapeutic Specialist in Internal Medicine and the Coordinator of Clinical Services at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, Canada. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Spina graduated from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences with his BSc in Pharmacy in 2000. He completed his hospital residency in 2001 and his Doctor of Pharmacy in 2007. Since the beginning of his career, Dr. Spina has been interested in incorporating technology into clinical practice and has authored several published articles on this topic. His research efforts have focused on objectively assessing the impacts that mobile technology has on the delivery of patient care. Island Health has rolled out iPhones to all pharmacists across Vancouver Island, and Dr. Spina has studied the impact that this mobile technology has had on pharmacists' efficiency. He has subsequently focused his research on bridging the communication gap between hospital practitioners and community physicians. He recently completed an award winning evaluation of a new Canadian communication application and is an active member of the Secure Mobile Clinical Communications working group at Island Health. In addition, Dr. Spina is a Vice-lead on the development of a Pan Canadian Electronic Data Capture System for capturing Clinical Pharmacy Key Performance Indicators. Dr. Spina has received numerous local, provincial and national awards for the work he has done in formally evaluating the impact that technology has on clinical practice and it's impact on patient care. Additionally, he has multiple peer reviewed articles published on these topics. In 2017 he received the Health Employers Association of British Columbia; Excellence in BC Health Care Award; and Top Provincial Innovation.
