Sandy Hilfiker, MA is CommunicateHealth’s Chief Experience Officer. Sandy is a leading expert in the design and development of consumer health websites and e-health tools for users with limited health literacy skills and limited experience with the web. Sandy is a passionate advocate for user-centered design with a decade of experience in health communication and usability research. She has overseen formative research studies — including protocol development, data analysis, and design and usability recommendations — conducted with more than 800 users. Sandy is also a seasoned project manager with experience coordinating large federal communications contracts as both a contractor and a federal employee.
At CommunicateHealth, Sandy: serves as the Director of a $15 million Blanket Purchasing Agreement to support web, communication, and marketing for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) — including Healthy People 2020 and 2030, healthfinder.gov, and health.gov; led development of Health Literacy Online: A Guide for Simplifying the User Experience; provided communication strategy and formative research expertise in support of the federal government’s 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans — including surveys, interviews, and focus groups with more than 100 nutrition professionals; and directed a usability assessment and website redesign for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
Sandy previously served as Health Communication Advisor for ODPHP. In this role, she provided strategic leadership for ODPHP’s web and social media presence and oversaw more than 15 formative research and usability studies to inform the Office’s websites and tools.
