Dr. Margaret Donahue has worked for the Veterans Health Administration since December 2013 as a Physician Informaticist. In October 2014 she was promoted to the position of Director for the Veterans Health Information Exchange, also known as VLER Health and Co-Director of the Interoperability Office. She is a board certified Family Physician with subspecialty certification in Clinical Informatics. Dr. Donahue has a 15-year history of healthcare informatics and operational management experience. Prior to working for VA, she worked at Unity Health System in Rochester, NY for 25 years, both as a Family Physician and Clinical Informaticist, including the role of Chief Medical Information Officer. In this role she oversaw the implementation of both the Ambulatory and Hospital electronic medical record (EMR) systems, as well as the interoperability platform connecting them. Dr. Donahue was a six-year member of the Greater Rochester Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) Management Committee, participating in the vendor selection process and implementation of the Rochester RHIO to a 13 county area around Rochester, NY. She also provides VA representation to the eHealth Exchange, CareQuality and Commonwell national networks. She also serves on the DirectTrust Clinical Steering Committee and the American Hospital Associations Interoperability Workgroup. As the lead of the Veterans Health Information Exchange, Dr. Donahue oversees bidirectional health information exchange with the VA’s Community Care partners, including policy, partner onboarding, VA Medical Center implementation and most importantly Veteran engagement
