Dr. Showalter brings visionary thought leadership on the application of advanced information technology to improving outcomes for patients. His unique education in biomedical engineering, physiology, clinical informatics and internal medicine has allowed him to work at the intersection of those fields to positively impact patient care and health system efficiency. His work has been recognized with cross-industry awards like ComputerWorld's Premiere 100 IT Leaders and Health Data Management's Clinical Visionary All-Star. Dr. Showalter was honored with the 2015 CHIME Collaboration Award for his efforts to incorporate clinical cognitive science into physician EHR work flows to improve patient outcomes.
Additionally, Dr. Showalter provides thought leadership on information governance, the value of partnerships between physicians and health information management professionals, and methods for operationalizing predictive analytics in meaningful ways within health systems. Synthesizing these ideas, Dr. Showalter partnered with Leigh Williams to found Propel Health IT and now offers educational seminars to health information technology innovators on how healthcare providers and executives think, act, and make decisions. Together, they published "Mastering Physician Engagement: A practical guide to achieving shared outcomes" with HIMSS and CRC Press in January 2017. Dr. Showalter received his B.S. in biomedical engineering from Columbia University and his medical degree and a master of information systems in health care delivery and management from Penn State University. In addition to his board certification in internal medicine, Dr. Showalter became one of our nation’s first physicians to become board certified in clinical informatics in 2013.
