Dr. Jason Shapiro has conducted biomedical informatics research for 15 years, with continuous federal funding since 2007 from various sources including the National Library of Medicine, the Agency for Healthcare and CMS. Dr. Shapiro's main focus is health information exchange, which shares clinical information across provider organizations in a region, enhances functionality and use of electronic health records, and provides real-time community-wide clinical data that can enhance care delivery. Dr. Shapiro investigates HIE’s impact on quality measurement, care coordination, resource utilization, costs, and provider satisfaction, with increasing focus on developing new services that leverage HIE data in innovative ways. His informatics research also includes EHR implementation evaluation, usability testing, controlled terminologies, translation of clinical policies into computerized clinical decision support, workflow optimization, public health, and biosurveillance.
