Dr. Donald Spencer has a greater than 35 year history as a practicing physician with over 30 years in academic medicine. After private practice experience in rural Anson County, North Carolina from 1980 to 1986, he taught and practiced from 1986-1996 at the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Family and Community Medicine. There he established office information systems in three rural practice sites and was responsible for practice management curriculum development in the family medicine residency. He has been with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1996 where he is presently Professor of Family Medicine. In August 2012 he became Vice President and Chief Medical Informatics Officer for the UNC Health Care System. Prior roles have included Program Manager for the Carolina Data Warehouse for Health (May 2008) and Medical Director and Vice President of Ambulatory Care for UNC Health Care (October 2010). His interests are in the areas of medical practice management and information sciences.
