Dr. Portier has extensive experience working both in the hospital and skilled nursing facilities. He is a Medical Director at two nursing facilities in San Francisco, as well as the Medical Director of the Post-Acute Care Division of Bay Area Hospitalist Associates (BAHA). He is an advocate for improving transitions of care and ensuring a smooth transition for patients transferring from hospital to skilled nursing or rehabilitation facilities. Dr. Portier is also skilled with health information technology and electronic heath record systems (EHRs). He assists in the training of his physician colleagues on these systems and investigates new medical technology opportunities for BAHA. In addition, he enjoys daily teaching of the residents and medical students at St. Mary's Medical Center, and is also Faculty Assistant Professor of Medicine for Creighton University, Omaha, NE. He is a firm believer in achieving success through teamwork and clear communication with patients and their families.
Dr. Portier was previously an attending physician at UCSF Medical Center and Co-Director of CRI (Cancer Research Institute), which is their adult bone marrow transplant service. He was also an academic Hospitalist, working for the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF, and appointed as a clinical instructor of medicine. He was named Outstanding Faculty Teacher of the Year at St. Mary’s Medical Center in 2013.
Dr. Portier is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as well as certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Fundamental Critical Care Support.
