Three Secrets to Take Control of an Unruly Order Set Catalog

Is your order set catalog a challenge? With over 1,200 electronic order sets across two domains and 39 hospitals, our Dignity Health order set catalog was unruly, at best. Early in our EHR journey we opted to use order set management software, but the duplicate build and reconciliation work required made this an unscalable option. In the fall of 2016, a small subgroup of our user experience team designed and piloted a process we named Evidence-based Knowledge Governance (EKG). EKG married our existing EHR governance to a best practice framework. Since then, nine physician specialty groups and three non-physician groups have engaged in EKG on over 140 electronic order sets. This session will discuss the three key tenets to unfolding this process: 1) automate the data; 2) assign every electronic order set a home and 3) assure a physician-friendly review process.
