Pharmacies wouldn’t survive without having some kind of system in place to help patients track their prescriptions like an automated phone system, websites or smart phone app. Unfortunately, these systems by themselves fall short of the main objectives of giving patients control over their pharmacy information and lightening the workload of the pharmacy staff. An ATM-like machine in the drive thru lane would allow patients to put in their information and see all of their prescriptions including what is ready, what is out of refills, or what is past due for a refill. Using a PIN number or barcode, they can access their account, see prescriptions, request refills, change billing options, etc. without having to go through a technician or pharmacist. The machine then generates a new promised pick up time. Now the patient does not have to wait to speak to someone. They know to come back or the proceed to the window to check out. Prescriptions that need corrections will be dropped into the appropriate queue, most likely the data entry station to be correct. This prevents disruption to the normal work flow of the pharmacy and holding up the drive thru line.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate current work flow practices in the community pharmacy
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having a drive thru
  • List current programs in place that are available to the patient to help track their prescriptions
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of giving patients direct access to their profiles to make requests, input insurance changes without going through pharmacy staff or current adherence programs
