Description

Drug diversion has surged in healthcare in recent years, creating hefty impacts for care providers who are concerned about patient safety implications from staff struggling with opioid addiction. The Department of Justice and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration are pouring vast resources into tackling the growing problem of drug diversion with strong focus on healthcare providers. This focus includes diversion investigators, intelligence research specialists and special agents who are spearheading administrative and enforcement actions leaving care providers with the complex task of creating comprehensive drug diversion monitoring programs. In this presentation, nine steps are detailed that providers can take to create a full-lifecycle drug diversion monitoring program. In doing so, providers can help ensure patient safety, the compliance and reputation or their facility, and hold drug diverters accountable as well as provide the treatment they need to recover from addiction.
