Standardizing Use of Clinical Best Practice with Information and Technology: A Davies Story

1:30pm - 2:30pm Tuesday, March 6
Las Vegas - Venetian Convention Center
Murano 3301

Description

Using data to identify a best practice and then enabling adherence to those best practices is critical for removing the variability and improving health outcomes. This session will share how two 2017 HIMSS Davies Award winning health systems used information technology to standardize care delivery and improve patient outcomes. Memorial Hermann Health System will demonstrate their interdisciplinary process for creating, implementing, and utilizing evidence-based care bundles to significantly reduce incidents of ventilator associated pneumonia. began an intensive focus on the elimination of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Lafayette General Health (LGH) will share discuss how to implement a sepsis monitoring tool, review documentation and improve the ordering process to help reduce the mortality rate, improve quality measure compliance and impact the bottom line. Through these multiple interventions, LGH observed a 23% reduction in Sepsis mortality rate and a cost savings of over $340,000 in one year.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how governance can drive accountability and compliance to improve patient outcomes
  • Discuss how the utilization of data can drive the incidence of VAP downwards, towards a rate of zero
  • Identify key processes, workflows, and resources to be involved in revamping care processes for potentially septic patients
  • Evaluate quality measures that are impacted by sepsis prevention measures
  • Demonstrate how HIM and CDI are integral in appropriate coding and reduced mortality
