Session ID:

Improving Communication, Patient Care and Staff Well-Being

1:00pm - 2:00pm Thursday, March 12
Orlando - Orange County Convention Center

When Hardin Memorial Health (HMH) doubled the size of its ED to better serve its growing population, the hospital also added more care team members and implemented a new communication system. Change management under these circumstances would be tough in any area of a hospital, but emergency medicine is one of the most stressful types of care. HMH took a multi-disciplinary team approach, empowering staff members who care for patients in the ED every day to design the layout of the new space and select its special features. Learn how a team of ED leaders, clinicians and others evaluated and successfully implement a hands-free, voice-controlled communication system while onboarding new team members and serving hundreds of patients a day in the midst of a $15 million construction project. Their strategic approach to deployment and training was executed so well that within four months, patient satisfaction scores and left without being seen rates were already showing improvements.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate and identify a mobile solution to remove workflow hassles, eliminate delays and improve communication between care team members to elevate patient care, safety and satisfaction
  • Analyze and outline how hands-free communication technology can improve care team collaboration, clinical workflow, operational efficiency, while improving left without being seen rates and patient satisfaction scores in the emergency department
  • Explain how integrated, intelligent communication can positively impact patient care, quality, safety, satisfaction and outcomes
  • Discuss how a wearable, hands-free communication system can improve staff safety with a simple touch of a button that connects care team members with safety and security personnel
