Professional Development Best Practices for Early Career Health Informatics Students

This poster will be displayed in conjunction with the HIMSS20 Career Expo. Posters will be available for viewing through the entirety of the event. Poster presenters will be available for questions from 11:00 am -12:00 pm.

The researchers in this study had students engage in activities including but not limited to: preparation of career roadmaps, conversations with industry professionals, training in resume and cover letter writing, participation in national conferences, hands on training in preparing elevator pitches, mock behavioral interviews, training in professional networking and communication, exercises in business dinner etiquette, and management of a professional social media presence.
The resulting data suggests that early career scientists benefit from hands on training in the “soft skills” that complement the technical training gained in an undergraduate health informatics program to ensure workplace readiness and success, as gauged by student job placement and job retention and or promotion. From this, the researchers conclude that in efforts to best prepare the next generation of health informatics career professionals, there are tangible and manageable classrooms skills that need to be introduced in order to best prepare students for their successful transition into the health informatics technology workplace.
