Out-of-Control Order Sets? Get Control

4:30pm - 5:30pm Thursday, March 8
Las Vegas - Venetian Convention Center
Galileo 901

Description

Hospitals continue to struggle with integration of evidence-based order sets into electronic health record (EHR) systems and with maintaining the evidence-based clinical content once they are deployed into the clinical workflow. Faced with outdated order sets and a governance process that risked being non-compliant with Joint Commission standards, the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) faced these challenges head-on with a multi-faceted approach involving the establishment of a robust order set governance strategy, assignment of clinical owners to manage changes, and deployment of a third-party web-based review tool. This enabled UVMMC to (within a year) retire 119 unnecessary order sets, update the over 400 remaining order sets in its library to regain compliance without scheduling meetings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate gaps in clinical knowledge management as it pertains to evidence-based order sets
  • Outline Joint Commission requirements around evidence-based order sets
  • Designed a comprehensive governance plan for clinical knowledge management
