Navigating the New ONC Requirements for APIs

1:00pm - 2:00pm Thursday, March 12
Orlando - Orange County Convention Center
W230A

Description

ONC recently proposed changes to the certification criteria for Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that have the potential to improve the ability of patients to access electronic health information through the third party application of their choice, and better facilitate the flow of information between healthcare providers, health plans, and service providers. This session will examine the potential opportunities for healthcare provider, health plans and service providers, while addressing some of the complexities associated with implementing an API including patient matching, ensuring the security of electronic health information, and avoiding practices that could constitute information blocking.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the proposed changes to the certification criteria for APIs
  • Assess the potential opportunities associated with the implementation of advanced APIs
  • Analyze the difficulties associated with API implementation, including patient matching, data security and fee limitations
  • Distinguish between the requirements of the API conditions of certification and the information blocking exceptions
