A Low-Cost Concept for Telemedicine in EMS in Giessen

1:00pm - 2:00pm Thursday, March 12
Orlando - Orange County Convention Center
W209C

Description

In Germany, the amount of calls for EMS are steadily on the rise, resulting in a growing demand and workload for emergency physicians and advanced paramedics. While at the same time, the number of general practitioners and smaller hospitals are steadily decreasing. Furthermore, an aging population, with an increasingly complex medical history, leads to situations and emergencies in which a more detailed assessment and therapies are urgently needed. Therefore, common EMS systems need to find a solution to handle these situations. We have developed a holistic telemedical concept to connect in-hospital clinical emergency physicians and paramedics on the scene. By implementing and connecting systems that are already partially being used in common EMS in Germany, live audio and video communication, including vital signs between the two, can be established by keeping costs low, affordable, and at the same time protecting patient data in line with General Data Protection Regulation.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate how a holistic system can be created by assembling single solutions in to one solution
  • Discuss existing telemedical systems in EMS and create a different and holistic solution
  • Display difficulties in patient data transfer from EMS to the emergency room and illustrate several low-cost alternative solutions
  • Initiate a debate on how pre-clinical treatment of patients will change with the use of holistic telemedical solutions in EMS
  • Influence law-makers, healthcare organizers and practitioners on how telemedical solutions will adapt in a changing and more integrated global society
