Leveraging EHR data to improve OR Operations - St. Peter's University Hospital Case Study

10:30am - 11:30am Tuesday, February 12
Orlando - Orange County Convention Center
W208C

Description

OR administrators spend too much time sifting through data to determine why surgeons can’t get OR access outside their block. Traditional metrics like room utilization, number of cases, first case on-time starts, turnover, and other key performance indicators metrics are imperfect metrics upon which to make block allocation decisions, and surgeons typically have convenient explanations for why their numbers don’t match leadership’s expectations. Dr. Tannenbaum and Sanjeev Agrawal will explain how Saint Peter’s used EHR data to improve OR access with mobile and web tools, increased accountability with surgeon-centric metrics and reporting, and helped Saint Peter’s surgeons better understand the “WHY” behind OR metrics and the cultural changes required to improve OR capacity management. Included in the presentation will be detailed “before” and “after” comparisons of Saint Peter’s OR operations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how Saint Peter’s increased OR access during standard business hours for both new and existing surgeons using data from their EHR
  • Understand how Saint Peter’s increased accountability with actionable, surgeon-centric utilization metrics, resulting in significant improvement to their OR capacity management
  • Learn why adding visibility helped Saint Peter’s surgeons better understand the “WHY” behind OR metrics
