Increasing Access to Patient Counseling Information with Artificial Intelligence

With technologies advancing, it is important to find ways to use it to improve patient care. Artificially intelligent voice assistants can provide information on a variety of topics, including medications. Their platforms allow developers to publish information that can made freely available and provide a set of built-in capabilities. This project was designed to build an artificial intelligence tool that contains medication counseling information and make it easily accessible to patients. As part of the Healthcare Informatics curriculum at Belmont University College of Pharmacy, six students worked as a team to create an Amazon Alexa skill called My Medicine Cabinet that contains patient counseling information for the Top 200 prescribed medications. Each student involved in this project became a certified Amazon Alexa developer and learned to code in an AWS Lambda function in order to program the skill with accurate and reliable information. The students made a template to create a standardized format for each medication in the skill, which included brand and generic names, how to take the medication, side effects, other important considerations, missed dose instructions, and storage information. A disclosure statement was also included, stating that none of the information provided should replace a consultation with a licensed healthcare professional. Words longer than two syllables were avoided as much as possible, and the use of patient friendly terms were encouraged. Out of the six students that worked on this project, five prepared the drug information and one worked on uploading all of the information to the skill. All counseling information was found on LexiComp® and Micromedex® and was verified by a licensed pharmacist. As of April 2019, all Top 200 medications were completed and successfully uploaded to My Medicine Cabinet. It is currently available on the Alexa skill store and may be freely enabled on all Alexa-enabled devices. After asking Alexa to open My Medicine Cabinet, wake words may be used to ask Alexa about any of the medications on the list. Since beginning implementation in 2018, the skill has been enabled on 334 devices and used 157 times.  According to Amazon, the cloud- based voice system is available on over 100 million Alexa devices that have been sold as of January 2019, and there are over 150 products on the market available with an Alexa smart speaker. Using the Alexa platform allows the possibility of providing an immense number of patients access to vital medication counseling available at their convenience. My Medicine Cabinet can improve medication adherence and encourage safe use practices in patients by providing important medication information that is easily accessible through Amazon Alexa.
