HIE on FHIR: Context-Specific Data to the Bedside

4:00pm - 5:00pm Thursday, March 12
Orlando - Orange County Convention Center
W204A

Description

This presentation will describe a FHIR based approach to information retrieval to integrate context specific data from a health information exchange into the electronic health record (EHR) to the bedside. Information retrieval is time consuming but an integral part of good informed patient care. Data searches based on presenting complaint or symptoms is often predictable and using curated content we can bring high valued clinical content to the EHR almost immediately. The evaluation of the impact of a single use case utilizing this application will also be described.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe current barriers to the use of health information exchange and electronic health records in emergency care
  • Discuss a mixed-method evaluation approach for health IT that focuses on outcomes relevant to HIE integration with EHRs
  • Describe the outcomes of a preliminary evaluation of the Chest Pain application in terms of health information exchange use, and user perceptions of system usefulness, system/information quality, system efficiency and potential system improvements
  • Discuss the power and potential for FHIR-based information retrieval and a framework to deliver context specific content to the point of care
