Engaging patients in the management of chronic care in rural areas. This session will provide a discussion of the potential barriers to adopt patient-facing tools in rural health centers, the value of conducting usability tests to mitigate these barriers, and a discussion of clinical studies needed to evaluate the impact of these tools.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify the major barriers to adoption of patient-facing health IT tools in rural areas
  • List the needs of patients living with chronic conditions in regards to self-management
  • Develop a step-by-step procedure for a usability test of patient-facing health IT tools
  • Discuss the clinical study design needed to evaluate the impact of patient-facing tools in rural areas
