“I just wait for the letter from the collection agency, then I know I should pay.” This statement is from a focus group discussing medical payments. This patient wasn’t alone. There was at least one patient in every session who waits for the collection notice before paying medical bills to be sure the amount represents what the payer is supposed to pay and the provider is supposed to bill. Consumers are confused about what they owe. The most common reason for calls to a national health insurance carrier is for clarification on billing, which ranges from provider billing tactics to benefit plan design and general doubt regarding the scale of payments. Payers, providers and consumers are investing in understanding and managing medical payments. This time and money only add to healthcare administrative costs.
