Challenges in the Evolution of HIEs: New Roles for Exchanges

10:00am - 11:00am Wednesday, March 11
Orlando - Orange County Convention Center
W230A

Description

Health information exchanges are too important to let them grow stagnant. HealthShare Exchange (HSX), the HIE serving the Greater Philadelphia area, has now taken pioneering steps in expanding its business lines and partners to define new roles for HIEs. HSX has launched a for-profit subsidiary for commercial innovation and business and job creation. It has created a population health portal, has partnered with non-medical community organizations, and has expanded across state lines. All of this was to open up the power of its clinical data repository, enhance revenue stability into the future, and benefit end-users. These are model initiatives for the next stage of evolution for HIEs around the country. They will become visible in consumer apps, public health, neighborhood resources, and cross-state cooperation in health information exchange. Learn how a nonprofit HIE continues to invent itself to increase its relevance and financial potential.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the need for health information exchanges to remain relevant and describe the untapped data potential they have
  • Characterize directions that HIEs can move to make profitable new uses of their data
  • Explain the types of steps needed internally, and in establishing relationships, for HIEs in opening their data repositories across broader business, community/public health, and membership areas
  • Identify the kind of partnering entities involved in an HIE expanding its purview and roles
  • List the types of benefits to an HIE, and its participants/partners and individual lives, from steps to evolve its role as a more broadly used data platform
