From Burnout to Engagement: A Community Hospital’s Story

This physician-led interactive session will allow attendees to work with simulated Maslach Burnout Inventory and Areas of Worklife drivers of burnout results. Technology Acceptance Model results will be shown to identify root causes of burnout, prioritize the root causes, and develop both organizational interventions and individual interventions. This session will help to positively impact the Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) drivers, reduce burnout, and improve physician wellness. Throughout this session, the physician leaders will explain the outcomes of the evidence based tools and how to transition from burnout identification to burnout resolution.

Learning Objectives

  • Define burnout, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lower professional accomplishment
  • Describe the influence that the Areas of Worklife drivers (workload, control, community, values, rewards, and fairness) have on provider burnout
  • Evaluate measurements from best practice tools to identify root causes of provider burnout
  • Use simulated best practice tool measurements to design targeted interventions to positively influence the Areas of Worklife drivers and therefore reduce burnout
