Barriers to mHealth Applications: Identifying and Solving Them

9:30am - 3:30pm Wednesday, March 11
Orlando - Hyatt Regency
Hyatt - Regency Ballroom U

Description

This poster will be displayed in conjunction with the HIMSS20 Career Expo. Posters will be available for viewing through the entirety of the event. Poster presenters will be available for questions from 12:00 pm -1:00 pm.

The poster consists of an introduction to mobile health technologies and applications (mHealth) and an explanation of its benefits. Then some notable specific barriers to mHealth are explained in detail. Barriers focused on are: willingness to use mHealth applications in patients with sensitive disease states (i.e. HIV), patients with dexterity issues and how it affects their use of mobile devices, and challenges patients with type 2 diabetes living in rural communities face. These three issues, although each unique, all have a common barrier: patient awareness of mHealth applications in the first place. This is then discussed and methods are proposed that would make these applications more widely known to the patients who can utilize them. The poster ends with a conclusion and suggested resolutions to all barriers mentioned, both specific and broad.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify importance of mHealth to both patient adherence and patient health outcomes
  • Describe barriers patients with HIV, dexterity issues or patients with type 2 diabetes have with using mHealth technology
  • Discuss how to create potential solutions to barriers and determine how to address new ones as they arise
