Adolescent Privacy: Solve This Problem or I'll Text You

7:30pm - 8:30pm Tuesday, March 6
Las Vegas - Venetian Convention Center
Marcello 4401

Description

Adolescent privacy has been a problem with EHR functionality since pediatricians and family doctors began to adopt technology (and many were early adopters!) Patients and users have been begging for a solution and adolescent patients and their providers are creating work-arounds to store data, communicate and share information. This problem has been compounded with improved data sharing as local solutions cannot be trusted to protect privacy when electronic data is transmitted. Explore the current gaps and challenges via case-based examples and review creative solutions. Review the solutions proposed in Meaningful Use 3 and what work remains to be done.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify unique challenges in adolescent privacy through case-based examples
  • Describe the implications of the current state of privacy functionality on the care of adolescents
  • Discuss one approach to addressing adolescent privacy concerns with data management in the EHR
  • Compare solutions proposed within Meaningful Use 3 specifications to the entire spectrum of needed functionality and identify remaining gaps
  • Formulate a call to action for appropriate stakeholders to solve this problem
