Continuous monitoring in the general care setting has been shown to have a positive effect on patient safety. However, patient population characteristics and clinical resource availability in this setting present particular challenges for monitor system design, especially with regard to alarms. This talk will focus on how several cognitive science concepts were applied to develop effective alarm strategies for this particular environment.
