King Faisal Specialty Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) improved patient length of stay (LOS), patient satisfaction, falls, and infection control with the utilization of “smart room” technologies. KFSH&RC is largely paperless, however faced a challenge to ensure data was timeously entered into the electronic healthcare record (EHR). A delay in inputting data into the EHR can compromise patient care by limiting the ability of the CDS engines to run. Even though largely paperless, nursing practice relied on paper processes. Examples such as patient room signage, communication between the patient and the care team which had a negative impact on the patient experience, and device information. A technical approach to overcoming this latency was to develop “smart room” units with full integration of the EHR, bedside medical devices, nurse call systems, patient education/engagement, and care team communication.
