West Virginia has one of the worst opioid epidemics in the country but is employing innovative strategies to combat addiction and its consequences. The West Virginia Health Information Network is utilizing its tools in unique ways to provide valuable information to clinicians at the point of care and to care managers who support impacted patients over time. The tools provide: data on opioid prescriptions; real-time overdose alerts; alerting and tracking tools for children who are victims of Intrauterine Substance Exposure; coordination tools for children in the foster care system; and coordination tools for pregnant women who are in recovery. The presentation will cover technology and stakeholder challenges, consent issues and how to balance providing valuable information to providers with concerns over stigma.
