Most hospitals use some form of business intelligence (BI) to collect data, analyze, and act on the insights the data reveals. In working with multiple facilities, a common triple threat emerges that can dramatically interfere with a facility’s ability to succeed: knowledge hoarders, siloed departments, and data context. These three challenges, which often happen concurrently, make it difficult to detect runaway costs and operational inefficiencies in order to prevent them from spiraling out of control. Before facilities embark on the time-consuming (and expensive) mission of improving BI that leads to lasting, positive change, learn from those who have done it well—and those who haven’t.
