Five percent of all Medicaid patients account for more than 50% of costs, and 70% or more have co-morbid physical and behavioral health issues. To address these costs and gain efficiency, in 2015, Arizona’s Medicaid Program (AHCCCS) became the first to completely integrate all state services for physical and behavioral health.
In support, Health Current, Arizona’s non-profit health information exchange, launched an integrated HIE strategy in 2016. This integrated all physical and behavioral health information, including substance abuse information into the state HIE. Close work with AHCCCS brought all providers who serve high-needs patients into the HIE, including behavioral health and substance abuse providers as well as jails and correctional facilities. Since then, Health Current participation has grown by more than 700% and essential technology and support programs were put in place, pioneering full integrated exchange – the whole enchilada. This presentation tells that story.
