There isn’t a one-size-fits all algorithm for scaling innovation at health systems, but research shows there are commonalities among health systems that say they can scale innovation efficiently. Six practices were identified through primary research of health system C-suite executives, conducted by The Health Management Academy in partnership with the Center for Connected Medicine (CCM), of which UPMC is a partner. Among key findings: the health system C-suite turns to innovation as a means of revenue generation, as opposed to patient engagement or other measures; there is a correlation between systems that structure innovation teams and processes and the ability to scale innovation quickly; and despite mounting pressure for industry transformation, only a third of responding health systems say they can implement innovation “somewhat quickly.” Tal Heppenstall, President, UPMC Enterprises and Executive Vice President and Treasurer, UPMC, and Aimee Quirk, CEO, innovationOchsner, Ochsner Health System will unpack a data-backed innovation framework, coupling strategies with case studies from their organizations’ innovation arms.
