Extended Reality (XR) has been one of ‘the next big things’ in healthcare for several years. Point solutions are beginning to be marketed in clinical settings. The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Center of Excellence in Telehealth is taking a broader approach to exploring XR as a transformative clinical interface for providing care to patients. The research being conducted includes: prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of impairments related to concussion; cognitive training for youth with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; social skills training for children with autism; behavioral, cognitive, and exercise therapies in children with chronic pain; and Teacher-Child Interaction Therapy for teachers in classroom settings. The Center is not only exploring the effectiveness of the technology, but its usefulness in traditional and non-traditional delivery settings. The current research methods and technology development will be discussed along with early results.
