As enrollment in high-deductible healthcare plans increases, high prescription costs are becoming the new norm for many patients. This medication price hike can lead to prescription abandonment, ultimately endangering patient health. In 2018 alone, an estimated 140 million prescriptions were abandoned. Yet providers often lack the info they need to discuss cost with patients — only half say they can access formulary tier information at the point of prescribing, and only a third see out-of-pocket cost. Moreover, providers don’t always trust the formulary data they do receive. Cost-transparency technologies like real-time benefit check (RTBC) address many of the healthcare industry’s medication access and adherence challenges. This session will outline why cost-transparency functionality is needed, the different implementation models available in EHRs, and highlights from a recent case study that illustrates how one of those implementation models led to fewer surprises at the pharmacy and better drug therapy adherence.
