With 700 percent growth over the past three years and more than 630 participants representing a broad spectrum of diverse, statewide participants, this organization faced a significant “data dragon,” in the variability in coding terminologies and data content among data suppliers and users that impedes the flow and use of more complete patient information. Community support from the state Medicaid program and a broad base of HIE participants not only contributed to rapid growth but also to a community approach to problem solving. Anticipating rapid and diverse growth, a strategic plan for 2017-2019 was implemented that included a data quality strategy. One of the reasons data quality can be such a difficult “dragon” to tame is the challenge of getting data suppliers and users engaged in a common solution. However, this statewide approach paid dividends in finding common ground and solutions. This session tells that successful “data dragon” taming story.
