Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has developed the first universal EHR-based order and requisition for Next-Generation Sequencing from external molecular labs. What started out as a process improvement project for specimen send out has become an innovative data capture strategy that is hugely beneficial to SCCC. The order has successfully streamlined requests for molecular sequencing of advanced stage cancer patients. Housing the order in the EHR leads to automatic collection of valuable data for analysis of physician practice habits and future quality assurance projects. Implementation of this tool could greatly benefit precision medicine programs for any cancer center. This is a scalable and flexible solution that can be implemented in any electronic health record environment. The University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has used simple order programming and collaboration with industry partners to completely revolutionize Precision Medicine.
