The Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) System is committed to leading the industry’s transition to value-based care. As part of this effort, one of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s (BCBSA) interoperability principles is that patients have access to data - the right information, at the right time, for the right person. In July 2019, BCBSA, several BCBS companies and national health plans were invited to the Blue Button Developer Conference. There, BCBSA and several BCBS companies made a pledge to participate in the real-world testing of the CARIN Blue Button FHIR API implementation guide in 2019 so that the API can be moved into production in 2020. This session will provide background on the CARIN Blue Button 2.0 efforts in the context of the CMS MyHealthEdata Initiative and its stated goal in 2018 to help beneficiaries manage their health and share their data with doctors. Additionally, details on this work with cutting-edge open API standards and the approach taken will be shared.
