After Richard unexpectedly delivered his child in the car, he thought the baby would be in good hands once they arrived at the hospital.  However, a nurse mistakenly gave the infant 20 times the dosage of glucose as prescribed by his pediatrician.  Fortunately, the error didn’t take his life. But it certainly caused significant stress to the family and prompted a prolonged stay at the hospital.

This is why we created MedEye—to intelligently detect bedside medication errors during the time of administration. By leveraging artificial intelligence, we are bypassing human errors that are caused by confirmation bias, workflow complexities, and human distraction. MedEye, using computer vision, automatically verifies the medication with the patient and records it into the system.

MedEye has been widely adopted in the Netherlands, UK, and Belgium since its launch in 2016. MedEye closes the medication loop and includes devices for nurses to verify medications automatically, a patient portal to provide an overview of all the medications given at the hospital, and a clinician dashboard for analyzing patterns and deriving insights.

We are very excited to bring this technology to the U.S. with the launch at HIMSS18.

Because MedEye can verify all types of medications with fixed, variable, or fractional doses, the situation that happened with Richard’s baby would have been prevented. In addition, MedEye can be easily integrated with CPOE, ePharmacy systems, existing barcode scanners, and electronic health record systems. MedEye can be deployed in a ward within a day, allowing hospitals to see the benefits quickly.

Netherlands, February 26, 2018—Eliminating medication errors has been the driving force for many technology innovations such as electronic health records (EHR), computerized physician order entry (CPOE), and barcode labelling. Mint Solutions has been at the forefront of ensuring patient safety in Europe with its closed-loop bedside verification system, MedEye, built on artificial intelligence and machine learning technology. Mint Solutions is announcing the availability of MedEye for North America and will debut at the 2018 HIMSS Annual Conference and Exhibition.

Intelligent: Unlike simple barcode techniques, MedEye uses computer vision to identify and verify medications regardless of whether they have barcodes on them, are tagged with RFID chips, or have no packaging or labeling at all. It can simultaneously verify up to 20 different medications at one time while documenting them in EHRs. MedEye can scan full and partial doses and verify all forms of medications from pills to capsules, injections, infusions, and pumps. Besides seamless integration to the hospital information system, MedEye’s Clinician Portal gives clinicians the ability to derive patterns and insights through medication administration data.

Easy to Use: MedEye is designed with the greatest attention to user experience. MedEye verification helps nurses work faster and more safely during medication administration. With the Medeye scanner, a nurse can simply put all the medications for a patient in a disposable tray, scan them, verify them, and document them in the hospital information systems within seconds. This allows nurses to work more confidently and with less stress. The MedEye Patient app shows patients and their loved ones what medications they’re taking, when they’re taking them, and provides additional background information about the medications.

Easy to get started: MedEye doesn't require logistics or workflow changes, which makes it easier and more cost effective to set up. Support and service of MedEye products are handled from end to end making it easy to maintain. Medication and barcode libraries, software upgrades, and hardware service are all taken care of, so the pharmacy and IT departments can focus resources elsewhere.

“By scanning with MedEye, errors are practically impossible because when MedEye finds an error or there is no prescription for a medication, we are notified immediately,” said Peter Wiergenga, Hospital Pharmacist from Deventer Hospital. “We have used MedEye for a while now and we are eliminating about 3 errors per day. Computers are, of course, more stable than humans and we are now able to provide better patient care."
