Recognizing the value of and need for the human spirit between caregivers and the patients they serve, HIMSS is honored to bring the Kate Granger Compassionate Care Award to North America. The call for applications is now open, and will close on Monday, Dec. 12. The recipients of the award will be honored at HIMSS17, during the Awards Gala, which will be held at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
The Kate Granger Award was established by Dr. Kate Granger, an English doctor who dedicated the end of her life to raising awareness around compassion in healthcare. In 2011, while working as a junior doctor in a British hospital, 29-year old Granger was diagnosed with a rare type of abdominal sarcoma: desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor. The prognosis was terminal, and the course of action was palliative chemotherapy to prolong her life. She passed away in July 2016, at the age of 34.
In response to a lack of personalized care, Dr. Granger started a social media campaign with #hellomynameis. As momentum for #hellomynameis grew, Dr. Granger developed an annual award, recognizing people who deliver outstanding, patient-centered care.
