6 Things to Expect at HIMSS17

By Carla Smith, MA, FHIMSS, CNM, Executive Vice President, HIMSS

It’s an exciting time to work in healthcare, and every year we look forward to bringing together the sector’s brightest minds and latest technologies for our annual conference.  As you read this, I am already on-site in the Orange County Convention Center getting ready for HIMSS17.  I’m very much looking forward to seeing you.

We’ve gathered experts and luminaries both in and outside of health and healthcare, including IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty; former Speaker of the House John Boehner and former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell; ABC’s Emmy winning Sharks Kevin O’Leary and Robert Herjavec; and many, many others. As always, HIMSS17 promises to be where the brightest minds in health and IT meet to explore solutions for transforming health through the best use of IT.

In addition to the speaker line-up, there are new, noteworthy “must see” components that we wanted to call out. Be sure and check these out during your HIMSS17 experience:

1. HIMSS Interoperability Showcase – Re-Imagined

This interactive showcase give you the chance to experience the true intent of interoperability – an ecosystem where health IT allows users to securely access, modify and analyze health data. Plan your time at the showcase to take full advantage of educational tours, interactive stations and the Product Marketplace to learn about cutting-edge health IT solutions. You’ll also have the chance to learn about ConCert by HIMSS, our sector’s only comprehensive interoperability testing and certification program.

HIMSS17 offers a prime opportunity to improve your organization’s threat preparedness. Join experts for hands-on sessions to enhance your knowledge of the current cyber threat landscape, present state-of-the-art technologies, and actionable insights you can use to thwart attacks. And, there is a significant amount of education happening throughout HIMSS17’s educational sessions, such as Engaging Executives and Boards in Cybersecurity.

3. Government/Policy Sessions

A session of particular interest I want to note to you is a fireside chat with former CMS Administrators Andy Slavitt (Obama Administration) and Mark McClellan (Bush Administration). Dr. Jon White, Acting National Coordinator is hosting an ONC Town Hall, and CMS is hosting multiple sessions, including one on Delivery System Reform.  Attend multiple government/policy-related sessions to have your most pressing questions answered regarding the new Administration, 115th Congress, and the implications for health IT and value-based care. There will be numerous opportunities to connect with peers and experts at all levels of government to discuss health IT-related public policy initiatives at both the state and national level.

6. HIMSS Health IT Value Suite – and the Value of Health IT

We’ve collected more than 11,000 case studies, published research, and articles documenting the value of health IT in a provider setting.  We’ve assembled all this knowledge into the “HIMSS Value Suite”.  And, using this knowledge, we’ve invented a “Value Score” that uncovers health organizations’ value strategy and analyze its impact. The value of health IT appears throughout HIMSS17, because all speakers at HIMSS17 linked their specific presentation to at least one of the value pillars from the STEPSTM model. Attend Precision Medicine Symposium on Sunday, Feb. 19 (Extra fee required). Learn more about the Value Score in a special session with HIMSS Analytics on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
