2016 HIMSS-AMDIS Physician Executive Leader of the Year Award Recipient Seeks to Optimize Healthcare with Health IT

Peter Basch, MD, MACP, will be honored at the 2017 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition Awards Gala in Orlando, Fla.

Peter Basch, MD, MACP, has been named the recipient of the 2016 HIMSS Physician IT Leadership Award, a joint award sponsored by Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) and HIMSS. The boards of directors of both organizations selected the recipient.

As the senior director for health IT quality and safety, research and national health IT policy for MedStar Health, Dr. Basch also spends about 20 percent of his time in direct patient care, as a primary care internist.

“Peter has been highly involved with HIMSS and AMDIS for 15 years. He is a deeply respected thought leader and has been a significant contributor to a wide array of HIMSS’s committees, task forces, and work groups,” said Pat Wise, vice president, health information systems, HIMSS North America.

His previous experience focused on EHR implementation and regulatory compliance (Medicare eprescribing and meaningful use).  In his current role, he provides policy and pragmatic clinical leadership for health IT’s next phase – that of post-regulatory optimization.

“Dr. Peter Basch is a gentleman physician who demonstrates a perfect combination of clinical compassion, scholarly erudition and wonderful good humor. It is an honor and a privilege to call him a friend,” said William F. Bria, MD, chairman of the board, AMDIS.

Dr. Basch will be honored at the Awards Gala  on Tuesday, Feb. 21, during HIMSS17, scheduled for Feb. 19-23 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
