Dr. Deeken is a Senior Vice President at Inova Health System, and Chief Operating Officer at Inova Translational Medicine Institute– a group of clinicians and researchers focused on providing genetic and genomic medical care, discovering new explanations for genetic disorders, and studying the best ways to integrate cutting-edge genomic resources into clinical practice. Dr. Deeken joined Inova Health System in July, 2013 as the Associate Director for Medical Oncology and for Clinical Research at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Northern Virginia. He is a board certified medical oncologist, and his areas of clinical and translation research include head and neck cancer, new drug development, and personalized medicine through pharmacogenetics. In 2016, he was named Chief Operating Officer of the Inova Translational Medicine Institute, the system’s genomic and personalized medicine research and clinical operation. He remains a practicing physician in the Cancer Institute. Prior to joining Inova, Dr Deeken was on the faculty at Georgetown University. He was Regional Director for Medical Oncology for Georgetown/MedStar Health’s Washington DC Region, Director of the Head and Neck Medical Oncology clinic in the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and an attending physician in Lombardi’s Experimental Therapeutics/Phase I Clinic. Dr. Deeken is active in clinical and translational research, and has published over 40 journal articles and book chapters. He is an Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and serves on the Admissions Committee and the Academic Promotions Committee for the VCU Medical School. Dr. Deeken also serves on the Government Affairs Committee for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and was a member of ASCO’s Head and Neck Cancer Scientific Committee.
