Gary Barnes serves as Senior Vice President / Chief Information Officer for Medical Center Health System in Odessa, Texas a 402- bed intergraded Health System. Medical Center Health System is a community owned teaching hospital and Health System serving 17 counties in West Texas. He is responsible for planning, acquiring and improving business processes and services using information technology, telecommunications, informatics and clinical engineering. His primary focus on the executive team is aligning community needs and service line strategies with information technology requirements to meet the needs of the patients, physicians and employees. Barnes has been at for 28 years Medical Center Health System; he is currently rounding out a community EHR for both inpatient and physician offices. Prior to joining Medical Center Health System, he was employed by IBM as a system support analyst. Barnes has also owned his own software business that developed quality assurance and Risk Management software for healthcare market. Barnes holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and Master of Business Administration from Kennedy Western. Barnes was on CHIME Board of Directors 2009-2012 and is a Fellow and charter member since 1992. He has served on several committees, including spring and fall forum planning committees, Benchmark, membership committee and the certified healthcare CIO Program development committee. Barnes attended the very first Healthcare CIO Boot Camp and has served as a mentor several times in the CHIME mentoring program. Barnes has served as chairman of the Volunteer Hospital Association (VHA) CIO council of Texas for several years along with several leadership positions with Insight McKesson User Group. Barnes has written several articles for Advance Healthcare Information Executives Magazine for the CHIME organization. Barnes serves as a member of Texas Health Information Technology Workforce Executive Committee
