David Markwell was a general practitioner (family doctor) in the UK. In 1986 he joined an innovative company and led the development of one of the first widely used clinical computer systems used in UK general practices. From 1989 onwards, working as an independent consultant, he worked full time on EHR development, standardization and associated consultancy. He was a founding member of later the chair of HL7 UK, a co-chair of the HL7 EHR Special Interest Group and a lead author of the HL7 TermInfo draft Standard. From 1999, as an independent contractor, he played a leading role in the design, development and documentation of SNOMED Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). In 2011, David joined the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization as Chief Implementation Officer and from 2014, as Head of Education, led the development of the SNOMED CT E-Learning service. The first E-Learning course was launched in 2015 and since then more than one thousand people have successfully completed courses. David leads a team of four specialists in SNOMED CT education and implementation that provides support to IHTSDO National Members, licensees, vendors and other stakeholders.
NOTE: IHTSDO is the Not-for-Profit organization owned by its Members responsible for distribution and maintenance of SNOMED CT. The Members of IHTSDO are countries and at the time of writing IHTSDO has 28 Members including the USA. From mid-2016 IHTSDO will be using a new trading name 'SNOMED International' and this has been used in the speaker introduction as it will be the name used in public materials at the time of HIMSS 2017.
