Blackford Middleton, MD, MPH, MSc is Co-Chair of the PCOR CDS-LN, Chief Informatics and Innovation at Apervita, Inc., Past-Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), and Instructor in the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in the Departments of Health Policy and Management, and Policy Translation and Leadership Development. Previously, he was a professor of Biomedical Informatics, and or of Medicine, at Stanford, Harvard, and Vanderbilt Universities, and he held executive leadership roles at MedicaLogic/Medscape, Partners Healthcare System, and at Vanderbilt.
From 2013-2014, he was Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, and Chief Informatics Officer, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and responsible for information technology supporting clinical informatics, educational informatics, research informatics, and financial systems. During his tenure there, Vanderbilt was recognized as one of the “Most Wired” healthcare systems. During his tenure at Vanderbilt he was also Professor of Biomedical Informatics, and of Medicine (with tenure), and engaged in mentoring junior faculty, Fellows, and students. Prior to joining Vanderbilt, he was Corporate Director of Clinical Informatics Research & Development at Partners Healthcare System, Boston, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and a Lecturer in Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health from 2001-2013. While at Partners he also was co-founder of the Center for Information Technology Leadership (CITL) and led its research in value-based technology assessment until 2010. While at Harvard, he was Principal Investigator on many large research grants and contracts, including the AHRQ-funded Clinical Decision Support Consortium, and the ONC-funded Advancing Clinical Decision Support grants, and collaborated extensively with others on research that resulted in numerous publications.
