HIMSS17 TOOK PLACE IN ORLANDO, FL
February 19-23, 2017
Today’s VA is faced with rapidly evolving technology, shifting social and demographic changes, and tight fiscal constraints. To maintain a modern IT environment, the VA must continually reassess how to efficiently and effectively provide, sustain, and enhance IT services in support of Veterans. One critical part of such a reassessment is that of information exchange standards. Information exchange standards, especially those that are employed for healthcare information exchange, must be monitored and evaluated on a routine basis to ensure that they meet VA and other Federal current and target strategic goals and requirements. One family of healthcare information exchange standards that VA is most involved with and employs are those specified under Health Level 7 (HL7). The latest HL7 Standard that is under evaluation for VA Enterprise implementation is known as “Fast Health Interoperable Resources (FHIR)”. VA’s evaluation and transition to HL7 FHIR® is currently underway. The presentations under this educational session will focus on: Current steps being taken by VA to ensure a successful transition of the Department to HL7 FHIR®, Issues, concerns, and lessons learned that have been encountered along the way, and Current HL7 FHIR® implementations taking place within VA.
