Tearing Down Interoperability Barriers: Real Life Impact on Business, Technology & People

February 21, 2017 — 07:30AM EST - 09:30AM EST
HIMSS Interoperability Showcase Theater™ [a part of the Tangerine Ballroom on the Exhibition Floor]

Interoperability in healthcare can be a vexing concept.  Are we talking about how information is exchanged or are we really speaking about how stakeholders and systems across the health ecosystem interact to create a complete picture of an individual’s health? This panel will tear down these perceived walls and give attendees real world examples of interoperability in action from a technological and an organizational perspective, as well as explore the ‘real life’ impact on provider workflow and the individual. Panelists will discuss how and why these examples have worked in the real world, and the technologies that made it happen.

Learning Objectives:

After this session, attendees should be able to:

  1. Describe a clear definition of interoperability as a concept from people, business and technical perspectives.
  2. Discuss the real-world impacts of interoperability and exchange (or lack thereof) on providers’ delivery of care and individuals’ experiences with care provided.
  3. Identify the importance of operational processes and clinical workflow and the role technology plays in supporting those processes.
  4. Analyze the technology and infrastructure required to achieve interoperability and implement exchange.
