KHIN is a leader in developing and implementing a statewide patient portal tied to an HIE. This model has generated a great deal of national interest. KHIN connected the HIE to a statewide patient portal in January 2015 and is now able to send patients their care summaries from hospitals and clinics across the state as well as sending discreet HL7 data. In addition, KHIN interfaced with the state immunization registry so people who have received immunization in Kansas and have a patient portal can access the state immunization registry and print a certified copy of their immunization record for themselves and for their children. Our statewide portal solves the issue of patients managing multiple portal user IDs and passwords by giving them access to all medical records in one place. We also provide an alternative to in-person authentication of patients by authenticating them over the phone using medical data. This reduces the burden of portal creation and allows us to reach out to patients all across the state.

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare the value of a statewide, untethered patient portal to other available alternatives such as a tethered portal to one EHR
  • Recognize the value of access to public health records availability in a statewide patient portal
  • Demonstrate the process of patient authentication by phone from HIE medical data and the impact this has on account creation
  • Describe the advantage for healthcare systems of a statewide patient portal
  • Recognize the advantage to patients of having their medical record in one patient portal
